Randolin Mandolin Cedar Top Carved -Walnut back, sides and neck
-Ebony fingerboard
The story; The walnut for this mandolin was cut in W.Va. in 1946 by my great grandfather as floor and roof rafters for their new house. I inherited this wood from my grandfather in 2011 when he sold the farm there which he had owned since late 1940's.The wood is so seasoned the color is the same inside and out, very stable and beautiful.
This M2-WV in the M2 series is WV for West Virginia, as most of the primary wood comes from W.Va. The cherry for the back and sides was cut in 1979 on my grandfathers farm, so has been seasoned for over 40 yrs. The neck is made from sassafras. Top is 20+ years seasoned spruce. Fingerboard binding is cherry, same as the body. Finish is french polished shellac, hand applied. Dimensions are as follows; Nut; 1 3/8 in Scale is 13 7/8 in ; body depth 2 3/8-2 19/32 Allen cast Tailpiece.

This is a version of a Puerto Rican cuatro, but a 22inch scale and 12 fret to the body instead of 9 frets to the body. We also make it using guitar building techniques joining the top and back, bending the sides, etc. Traditionally, the body shape is cut out of a single block of wood and the inside hollowed out and the top glued on. This is very difficult to maintain in a North American climate, and we also use more traditional woods like maple, cherry, walnut, spruce and cedar.
Here's a back view of the cuatro style octave mandolin. WE use a variety of woods including maple, cherry, walnut, butternut, spruce and cedar, for tops and back/sides, as well as sassafras, mahogany and butternut for necks.Call or contact us for more details. These instruments may be in stock, but are generally made to order.
Our octave mandolin body shape is based on our cuatro body style. Differences include a raised neck angle, and a bent or carved top. Ask about wood selection
